Transfigurations
“In ‘Transfigurations’, I deconstruct the subjects’ faces to allow the viewer the freedom and space to engage with the work and offer an alternative interpretation using only the essential features. Removing the outer layer of skin to reveal what’s underneath or adding more layers and texture to hide the original surface, gives a different and more conceptual perspective beyond the purely physical.”
“For me, the desire to continually improve is a vital creative ingredient and inspiration. I’ve always experimented with different styles and techniques but as an artist I define myself by my current work. I’ve learned that there’s far more to portrait painting than precise likeness. Layers and textures have become increasingly important elements of my work and have brought a freedom that is taking my painting style in a more abstract direction. My strokes are becoming looser as my confidence grows. You can see the progression even within this collection.”
